Tigbauan is known as the second-class municipality in the
province of Iloilo, Philippines. Specifically, it is the first district of
Iloilo and it has a population of 62,706 people according to the 2015 census.
The town is composed of fifty-two (52) component barangays.

 Tigbauan is pretty much popular for a lot of things. These words "Banwang Ma-Pinalanggaanon" usually describe by the visitors and tourists when they visited the town. Being in my hometown and living most of my life here (Tigbauan), I'd say it is one place that I can be proud of. As a matter of fact, Tigbauan have plenty to offer. Historical sites, Beautiful beaches,Eco-Farm and many more that Tigbauan could offer a world class experience and first class accommodations which you will never forget in your whole life and can capture not only your eyes but also your heart. You will surely love this place because aside from the alluring attractions and destinations, the people in Tigbauan or the Tigbauenos are very hospitable person and very welcoming to the guest that you will surely come back for sure!

HISTORY OF TIGBAUAN 
According to Maragtas legend, in the 12th century, there
was10 Bornean datus who escaped the cruel tyranny of their king and ended up
leaving their homeland. They sailed using their long boats called
"barangays" heading to the north. So they landed in Panay Island.
Datu Puti led those ten Bornean Datus/chieftains. They soon met Datu Marikudo,
known as the native chieftain of Negritos of the Aetas. So, these Bornean datus
bought the Panay Island from Datu Marikudo, in exchange of one golden salakot
and one gold necklace. After selling the island of Panay, the Aetas went to
mountains and it's where they live already. Panay was then divided among the
three datus namely Datu Sumakwel for Hamtik, Datu Paiburong for Irong-irong and
Datu Bankaya for Aklan-Capiz. The rest of the Datus went to Luzon. The families
from the labing-isog tribes and Mangwalis tribes decided to sailed on their
long boats as they follow where the sun is shining. Soon, they landed in a
place where tall reeds and giant grass was formed so the place was immediately
called "Katigbawan" because in the native dialect, it was called as
"tigbaw" Father Chirino called it "Camp de Suaraga" meaning
a field of reeds. Katigbawan is found in a big creek (Buyu-an Creek) and two
big rivers in north-east (Tacuyong and Sibalom Rivers). In year 1575, spaniards
discovered the place and a form of local government was functioning well in
Katigbawan. Later on, they establish "Pueblo de Tigbawan" and
shortened "Katigbawan" to "Tigbauan" (its present name).
Then, Pueblo de Tigbauan was transferred from Parara to its present location
today.

Tigbauan Church
Also Called as St. John of Sahagun Church  At the year 1867 the St. John of Sahagun Church was constructed under Fray Lorenzo Martin using forced labor. The Church had been through the world war II at 1945 and the great earthquake in 1948. 
Along the two walls of the Church it is constructed in the
design of the Stations of the Cross, the Lady of Fatima and the image of Adam
and Eve being banished from the Garden of Eden and a lot more were created by a
local artist in the last two decades.
It's beautiful baroque facade in rococo finish; its altar
with its mystical beauty done in intricate mosaic, with visions of Heaven and
Dante's Inferno, and the Way of the cross also in mosaic along the church
walls.

On the 16th century,
the Augustinian order was assigned responsibility for Panay and Tigbauan.
Rodriguez de Figueroa requested Jesuit missionary to minister to the residents
of his extensive land holdings in Panay.
His holdings were an “encomienda”, a grant from the Spanish crown. De Figueroa had the right to demand tribute
and labor from thousands of inhabitants, but had the obligation to see to their
spiritual needs.
De Figueroa
was a very powerful figure in Manila and an early patron of the Jesuits. He was
also a key figure in Tigbauan’s history. He came to the Philippines as a
penniless young adventurer as part of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi’s 1565 expedition
to plant Spanish colonies in the Philippines.
He rose in the ranks as he successfully carried out missions assigned to
him by the Spanish authorities, including expeditions to bring the Moros under
Spanish control.
De
Figueroa’s Panay encomienda was called Tigbauan.
Because de
Figueroa was a powerful supporter of the Jesuits, Jesuit vice provincial
Antonio Sedeno selected Brothers Pedro
Chirino and Francisco Martin for the
Tigbauan assignment. They arrived in
Panay in February 1593. Chirino was an energetic and multi-talented figure in
Jesuit missionary history. The pace and scope of his work in Tigbauan exemplifies
his energy and competence.
First
Chirino learned the local language, Haraya — which likely was a predecessor to
modern-day Kiniray-a. In a few months he
produced a catechism in Haraya. Within months of their arrival in Tigbauan,
Chirino and Martin had established a school for Visayan boys at Tigbauan in
which they taught not only the catechism but reading, writing, Spanish, and
liturgical music. The Spaniards of
Arevalo heard of the school and wanted Chirino to teach their boys too. He replied that he could not leave Tigbauan
to open another school in Arevalo. but he would be glad to have the boys come
to stay with him in Tigbauan and go to school there. The Arevalo parents liked his proposal, and
Chirino at once put up a dormitory and school house for the Spanish boys near
his rectory; the first Jesuit boarding school to be established in the
Philippines.

Marker of the First Ambush against the Japanese |
The Marker of the First Ambush is one of the historical sites of Tigbauan. It is celebrated every year on Sept. 2 to recognize the galantry and heroism of every Filipino, especially those Tigbauenos who bravely initiated the fight against the Japanese invaders on Sept 2, 1942, when the Japanese Forces landed on the shores of Tigbauan and oton during World War 2.
A War Veterans Memorial has been erected along the National Highway in Brgy. Namocon, Tigbauan, Iloilo in the nearly 70's. As you can see the monument is very new because it is been transferred at side of the Baranggay Hall due to recent road widening project. It is believed to be the actual site of the said First ambush in southern panay on said datein 1942.

Liberation Marker
The
Panay Landing Memorial marks spot where American Troops landed on March 18 on
the beaches of Parara Tigbauan to begin the liberation of Panay was only 2000
to 2350 soldiers. American soldiers came ashore to be greeted by the Philippine
guerillas said they are "stiff in strached khaki and resplendent"
Troops of the 185th inf. 40th Div. Take cover behind advancing tanks while
moving up on japanese positions on Panay on March 18 1945 by the time American
troop landed.

SEAFDEC is also known as the Southeast Asian
Fisheries Development Center . It is an intergovernmental organization established in December 1967 for the purpose of promoting sustainable fisheries development in the region. The Philippines-based SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) was established in 1973 to conduct research, develop technologies,disseminate information, and train people in the farming of fishes, crustaceans, mollusks, and seaweeds for food, livelihood, equity, and sustainable development.

Aquaculture Department (Southeast Asian Fishery Development
Center at Brgy. Buyu-an,Tigbauan hosts one of SEAFDEC’s Aquaculture Development
facility. The 40-hectare complex includes various research laboratories,
hatcheries, and broodstock tanks. Visitors can go see FishWorld, a
museum-aquarium-visitor center dedicated to science.
